Asthma: a systematic review
What are the risk factors?
Asthma is one of the most common respiratory diseases affecting children between 5 - 12 years hold and it is cause for a gradual reduction in respiratory function.
A systematic review has recently been published in Thorax to identify clinical and demographic characteristics that can help clinicians to identify children at risk of developing severe asthma. A review of 68 papers identified the most relevant risk factors: inadequate treatment, exposure to passive smoke, African and American ethnic groups, poverty and vitamin D deficiency.
It may be important to act at this level in order to reduce the risk of acute episodes and to prevent the reduction of respiratory function in these patients.
